The Registered Nurse Implant Coordinator for Surgical Services is assigned to the Office of the Chief Nurse Executive at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago, Illinois. FHCC is a VA and DoD dually integrated healthcare center providing care services to Veterans, Active-Duty Military Personnel, and their beneficiaries, including outpatient pediatric services. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Have at least a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing OR an Associate Degree/Diploma in Nursing with Baccalaureate Degree in a related healthcare field; MSN/MN or master's degree in a related healthcare field is preferred. Hold current certifications in BLS and ACLS; Have at least three (3) years of increasingly complex nursing practice; operating room experience preferred. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. The RN Implant Coordinator is responsible for: Ensuring that VA and VHA policies governing the management of implants are followed. Ensuring a system (manual or automated) is implemented for tracking all biological implants, from vendor or distributor to the recipient at implantation and that all necessary staff have access to local training on the system. Coordinating all aspects of implant management by working with SCM, PSAS, SPS, the VHA CO and all clinical areas using implants. Ensuring biological and non-biological implants are entered into the EHR by clinical service personnel upon implantation. Reconciling implants used with VA-owned inventory and vendor consignment stock or list by ensuring that adequate stock is available, while accounting for items used ordered and identified in submitted consults. Ensuring that biological implants are stored, tracked and continuously monitored in accordance with manufacturer requirements (as applicable, to exclude autografts) and VHA policy. Monitoring the processing of PSAS consults to ensure the timely procurement of needed implants and/or the payment for or replacement of used implants. Ensuring that clinical service submission of the prosthetic post-procedure surgical implant consults, consistent with VHA Directive 1081.01(1) and within 2 business days. Coordinating with the inventory manager, purchasing agents and the clinical service nurse manager, as appropriate, for the delivery of implants by sales representatives. Serving as a VA medical facility point of contact, along with the Patient Safety Manager, to the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) for patient and provider notification in the event of a recall or safety notice potentially affecting Veterans with implants. Serves as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for ancillary lab testing in the Operating Room (OR) for all OR personnel, e.g., physicians, technicians, and nurses. Conducts studies and recommends changes to correct deficiencies and improve the specialty area. Recommends new/replacement instrumentation. Super user status and full control/management of the implant tracking software used by the facility and all departments with implant inventory. Oversight of the inventory management specialists, monitoring and directing the day-to-day activities of these positions in regard to implant inventory. Works closely with COTR for implant contracts with Logistics for the acquisition of new implant inventory and maintaining up-to-date contracts for current inventory. Plan for personal growth as related to professional goals based on self-assessment, evaluation, and feedback. Assume responsibility for acquiring knowledge and experience to meet goals. Actively participate in professional organizations. Collaborate with the health care team, community agencies, and other providers within and outside the command to ensure continuity of the patient's care through all health care settings.
