The Registered Nurse (RN) functions as a responsible member of the multidisciplinary team, coordinating and delivering care for Veterans in this specialized residential treatment setting. The nursing duties include both administrative and clinical support for the Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP). *** Currently 2 Vacant Positions *** Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted. Coordinates Veteran care including admissions, Safe Medication Management (SMM), risk assessment, transition planning, and discharge planning. 2. Collaborates with the members of the interdisciplinary team in the organizing, planning, and delivery of clinical care to Veterans. 3. Provides supervision and delegation the Licensed Vocational Nurse LVN)/Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). 4. Provide patient and family education, including medical diagnosis, health promotion, and disease prevention. Participates in quality improvement activities, utilization review and performance measures. 5. Obtains vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, breathalyzer results, O2 saturation values, blood sugars, height & weight, etc.), explains procedures, and monitors behavior of Veterans on the residential unit. 6. Implements appropriate infection control measures for Veterans in the program. 7. Alerts team to \"AWOL\" status & reports/documents information obtained from Veteran regarding intention to AMA or return to program and issues related to safety while out of the facility. 8. Documents all Veteran contacts in CPRS (face-to-face and/or telephone). 9. Completes Clinical Reminders: documents in CPRS and reports positive findings to provider. 10. Recognizes overt abnormal signs & symptoms and/or changes in Veteran's condition and reports or responds appropriately. 11. Provides short term, one-to-one observations for Veterans deemed to be a suicidal risk. May assist with the escort of Veterans to the acute psychiatric unit (2-South Inpatient Unit), Mental Health Access Clinic (MHAC), or the emergency department (ED). 12. Checks Veteran pass request documentation/process for completeness. 13. Participates in the Unit Report Card audits. 14. Communicates and negotiates with all levels of the organization regarding system problems and recommends solutions. 15. Utilizes CPRS, Vocera, pagers, GuiMail, email, etc. according to policy and always protects Veteran information. 16. Maintains current/active BLS Certification. 17. Travels to training off station, as needed. 18. Assists with Veteran education regarding illnesses, medication, and medication management. 19. Monitor lab data, diagnostic testing, and discuss report findings with MD. 20. Conducts telephone triage and provides the necessary patient direction and education. 21. Completes clinical reminders, assists with appointment scheduling, patient follow-up, transfer of care, discharge follow-up, as necessary. 22. Provides immediate nursing intervention, as needed and appropriate, in emergency situations. Able to respond to emergent situations involving the suicidal or violent patient. Capable of making emergent decisions regarding the safety of the patient, staff, and others. 23. Serves as liaison for medical/psychiatric concerns and initiates referrals between Mental Health Clinics and Medicine. 24. Effectively communicates and interacts with patients and their significant others to help them with problem solving and developing coping skills. 25. Responsible for ordering/maintaining supplies in the clinical area (works ancillary staff to ensure the shot clinic supplies are maintained). 26. Conducts Nursing clinics and group processes. Documents group process and Patient response. 27. Maintains and monitors expiration dates of supplies in clinical area, crash cart, and informs ordering personnel if supplies need to be reordered Preferred Characteristics Day Shift: BSN preferred. Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing or Addictions preferred. At least two years current or recent (in the last three years) experience in acute inpatient mental health and/or substance abuse residential rehabilitation treatment preferred. This is a day shift position (0730-20) with rotations to nights (1930-08) to meet safe staffing needs of the SARRTP. Preferred Characteristics NOC Shift: BSN preferred. Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing or Addictions preferred. At least two years current or recent (in the last three years) experience in acute inpatient mental health and/or substance abuse residential rehabilitation treatment preferred. This is a night shift position (1930-08) with rotations to days (0730-20) to meet safe staffing needs of the SARRTP.
