Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest – WacoOrtho/ Neuro/ TraumaDepartment is a 24-bed medical-surgical unit. Our orthopedic population consists of all elective joint procedures (hip and knee replacements), and any broken bones that require surgery. Our trauma population includes those patients that have been in motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, stab victims, falls with injury, etc. We are a stepdown unit to our surgical ICU, which means that patients would come to 5 South when leaving the surgical ICU. On our unit we have the opportunity to see foleys, PICC lines, ostomies, chest tubes, NG tubes, external fixators, traction, and all different types of slings and braces. 5 South is a great mix of elective procedures, which means getting to see patients come in, get better, and discharge, while also having the social aspect of the trauma population. We have a variety of Registered Nurses that have been on the unit for 1 year, up to 20+ years. It is a wonderful place to learn the time management skills that will help throughout your nursing career, or a place to stay and grow with the team. 5 South also has the long-term goal to become a true stepdown unit to our surgical ICU unit, meaning we would be able to care for patients with a higher level of acuity.
