This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. NOTE: This applies to the past, current, and upcoming VA Health Professional Trainees (HPT) only. HPT is an individual appointed to temporary positions in one or more VHA medical facilities performing clinical or research training experiences to satisfy program or degree requirements or receiving VA Health Professional Scholarship Program. HPTs can be either VA-paid or Without Compensation (WOC). Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education. [Graduate of a training program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of PA (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following: (1) Master's degree in any discipline; OR (2) Bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a PA.] Certification. [Must have successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE). Licensure. PAs must possess an active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. PAs must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active and current licensure in that State. Preferred Experience: Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-8 Physician Assistant Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 lbs.); light carrying (under 15 lbs.); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (intermittent); standing (intermittent); hearing (aid permitted); clear speech. The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items like papers or books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. ["Major duties include but are not limited to: Supervises and coordinates activities of the physician health team to ensure optimal patient care services. Demonstrates leadership skills in improving patient care delivery systems. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, diagnose medical and surgical problems, prescribe necessary treatment and services for quality patient care. Takes patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the date in the EMR; write progress notes and narratives discharge summaries; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings. Orders laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient. Monitors progress of patients, follow up as indicated, and maintain adequate records of patient's progress. Facilitates the delivery of patient care in collaboration with health professional, clinical managers, nurse managers, and other healthcare personnel. Makes decisions which serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of a Physician Assistant within the healthcare system. Works assignments for assigned nursing and technical personnel; review the work of lower level employees and train new personnel. Develops and coordinate complex programs, training and/or education related to primary care. Establishes and maintains relationships within the service, facility management and other services that result in improved care. Participates in long range program planning and model development for the delivery of primary care and related services. Assures implementation, maintenance, and compliance with standards of professional practices of all health care personnel within the service. Performs other related duties as assigned.
