The Inpatient Wound Care Registered Nurse is responsible for the assessment, treatment, and consultation of patients with altered skin integrity, including but not limited to: pressure injuries, high- risk for pressure injuries, and wounds. The Inpatient Wound Care RN is also responsible for pre/post operative teaching, assessment, and care of patients with ostomies.
Essential Duties:
� Demonstrates proficiency and knowledge of current ostomy, skin, wound and incontinence management.
� Uses critical thinking skills and sound judgment based on evidence based practices when making the decision for appropriate wound care treatment
� Takes responsibility for personal professional development by keeping up with current research in wound care management and shares the findings with the interdisciplinary team.
� Conducts in-services and updates on skin integrity, wound, and ostomy care, as requested by the Nursing and Ancillary departments.
� Works effectively with other departments. Acts as a role model for the staff.
� Recognizes changes in a patient condition and communicates effectively with the team and physician to adjust the treatment plan as needed.
� Serves as a subject matter expert in skin integrity, wound, and ostomy care.
� Serves as a consultant for the treatment of patients with altered skin integrity.
� Provides consultation and direction on pre-op and post-op teaching in an individualized and convenient manner to patients undergoing ostomy surgery and appropriate family members.
� Provides consulting services and direction to the patients, family members, health care providers and physicians regarding wound care management.
� Provides consultation and direction to patients, family members, health care providers and physicians for the management of incontinence.
� In all aspects of consultation:
-Initiate care to meet patient's needs.
-Coordinate plan of care with physician/consultant.
-Assess patient response to treatment.
-Evaluate care provided by health care providers.
-Documentation of teaching instructions and patient's response.
� Serves as resource person for patient rounds, patient care conferences, clinical issues and assisting staff as needed.
� Supports staff development and orientation to wound care guidelines as established in the Wound Care Program.
� Participates in establishing and updating educational resource materials in the departments for patients, family, and health care providers.
� Attend seminars or courses annually to maintain current with wound care nursing and related technologies.
� All other duties as assigned under the scope of the Registered Nurse.
Qualifications:Qualifications
Education and Experience Required: Current Registered Nurse License in the state of California. Knowledge and education in wound care management. Obtain Wound Care Certification within 2 years of starting the position.
Preferred: Minimum two year experience in acute medical-surgical nursing.
