JOB SUMMARY:
Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with the physician continuously and as needed about patient condition. Assists with the maintenance of equipment and inventory. Assesses procedure room for equipment functioning and readiness. Obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of the Cardiac Cath Lab team are met. Monitors, positions and assists patient during procedure. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Clients served are predominately adults eighteen (18) year of age and older.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Job Duties
- Plans and provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
- Follows the 6 medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors and knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient�s age and provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including: pediatric, geriatric and general population.
- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes: pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient�s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
- Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.
- Demonstrates ability to provide professional care in accordance within the scope of nursing practice. Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers and physicians. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient�s needs and maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly; reports malfunction equipment.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
- Maintains and executes established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Maintains competency in Point of Care testing and evaluation.
- Cath Lab Specific
- Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of procedure rooms before and between cases and after terminal care.
- Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions and side effects.
- Demonstrates knowledge of arterial lines, Swan-Ganz and how to document appropriately.
- Is able to open sterile supplies and set-up for procedure.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all Cardiac Cath Lab equipment.
- Ability to perform a cardiac assessment per Cath Lab Assessment Sheet on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes adult and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
- Documents patient data during the procedure (heart rate, blood pressure, respirations, all pressures, O2 saturation, EKG). Maintains procedure records.
Qualifications:PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time
- Adheres to scheduling requests of the department (Works weekends, no �special days off�, no exceptions, unless in school).
- Adheres to the Customer Service Standards of Texas Regional Medical Center while representing the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department and complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Utilizes computerized punch time system correctly.
- Completes annual education requirements and maintains regulatory requirements.
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean and wears identification while on duty.
- Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion and has not missed any mandatory in-services.
- Attends staff meetings annually as required by department; is responsible for information presented at monthly staff meetings that he/she is unable to attend.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:
- Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Texas.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current ACLS certification.
- Minimum one year work experience in a Cardiac Cath Lab.
- Minimum of one year experience in critical care.
Language Skills:
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
Skills:
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Proficient in interpreting EKG and hemodynamic pressure tracings.
- Operates different equipment: x-ray table, camera, video recorder, ultrasound machines, pressure injectors, AngioJet, etc...
