The Registered Nurse (RN) Manager is assigned to the Surgical Service Health Care Group (Clinics include General, Podiatry, Ortho, Urology, Neuro/spine, ENT, Plastics, Ophthalmology, etc.) at the Long Beach VA Healthcare System. This position is in the Surgical HCG at the Long Beach VA Healthcare System. This position will be responsible for the overall Nursing operations of the Surgical HCG Specialty Clinics including ENT, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Thoracic Surgery, Urology, and Vascular Surgery. The Nurse Manager is accountable to the Chief, Nurse PCS, Surgical HCG and has continuing responsibility for all the following functions: - Responsible for direct supervision of outpatient nursing staff and technicians of the assigned areas. - Personnel management including scheduling, counseling, and evaluation of staff - Provides leadership in identifying and analyzing problems which effect/impede patient care and initiate their resolution. - Staff orientation, continuing education, and personnel development - Representing the department and unit within the organization - Data collection, analyzing, trending, reporting, including nurse sensitive indicators, risk management - Managing staffing process using VA Staffing Methodology and electronic staffing programs - Creating and advocating for a health work environment that is conducive to the recruitment and retention of highly competent nursing staff with diverse backgrounds - Implements policies and procedures in the area(s) and monitors compliance by staff members. - Fostering a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff and others. - Monitoring compliance with TJC standards and other standards and policies - Responsible for all issues that affect nursing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, function statements, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols, and competencies - Directing continuous improvement activities and ensuring nurse readiness for all internal and external reviews including TJC and National Surgery Office - Collaboration in developing, implementing, and maintaining Long Beach VA mission, goals, policies, and EEO guidelines. - Facilitates the Team Building process. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction, patient and employee safety, interviewing applicants, employee relations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards. Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. Responsible for· staffing their units on a continual basis (24/7), validating the daily patient classifications, and working with other Nurse Managers to identify and share resources. Responsible for time scheduling of the unit, coaches staff, deals with employee conduct and performance issues, completes recurring reports and performance evaluations in a timely manner. Participates on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. Identifies educational needs of staff and ensures that these needs are addressed. Has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences, as well as orienting new Nurse Managers. Works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles. In the absence of a Nurse Manager, a cross-covering Nurse Manager will be designated to handle administrative and clinical issues, such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and patient and/or staff issues.
