This position is open for one Nurse Practitioner at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in the Spinal Cord Injury Unit. The NP is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the NP's obligation to provide optimal care (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). Provides specialty care to adults with SCI/D issues, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of health care problems which may include prescription of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Areas include: SCI Clinic/SCI Inpatient SCI Urodynamics/SCI Urology testing Spasticity Management/ITB Therapy Independently manages patient care and collaborates with supervising physician as necessary. Includes the patient and family/significant other in developing the initial plan of care, establishing goals, and discharge planning Documents appropriately patients' History and Physical, as well as requesting appropriate consults Documents appropriately in the CPRS progress notes. Evaluates findings in collaboration with the supervisory physician. Completes each patient's medication reconciliation according to MEDVAMC policy. Writes appropriate provider orders and follows-up for implementation. Uses advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes. Functions as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities. Systematically evaluates current practice and formulates outcomes for patients and/or organizational processes within area of expertise. Guides, develops, and supports staff from a leadership perspective. Uses professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs/service activities. Demonstrates grade-appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills. The NP can recognize the patient has a problem. The NP can manage the problem safely and effectively, recognizing his/her scope of practice. The NP has a relative sense of urgency. The NP takes the right action for the right reason (del Bueno). Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) is completed twice a year and is rated competent in all measured areas.
