This Registered Nurse position is located in Nursing Service-PACU at the West Haven location. This position is a full time position at 40 hours per week. Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) nurses care for patients emerging from anesthesia and meticulously observes and treats patients after a surgery or procedure. Our ideal candidate works with a high level of attention to ensure each patient safely transitions from an anesthetized state to responsiveness. There are several tasks a PACU nurse needs to perform in a post-operative unit such as guiding patients to consciousness and assisting them in handling personal needs in the first few hours after surgery. PACU nurses manage respiratory instability and cardiac monitoring activities. PACU nurses handle a broad range of surgical patients; Orthopedic, Cardiothoracic, ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Neurosurgery, Robotic, Thoracic, GYN, etc. Communication is required between medical personnel regarding any abnormal test results, symptoms, or changes in a patient's condition while upholding the standards of care for our PACU. The PACU nurse must have knowledge of pain medications, anesthesia, life support and the awareness of surgical procedures and aseptic technique. Even though a PACU nurse answers to a physician, the nurse should be able to make judgments and assessments when it comes to pain, vomiting or trouble breathing. A PACU nurse must be a quick thinker, able to stay calm in emergencies and be professional. The PACU nurse must be organized and be able to prioritize issues with patients. A PACU nurse should be cheerful and personable. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the higher level. Notifications: This position is a Bargaining Unit position. This position is covered by a special rate. Selectee may be required to work at any VA Connecticut Healthcare System campus, as needed. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50 (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is in the Excepted Service. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments based on the candidate's education and experience. For internal selectees being promoted, the board will determine grade and HR will determine step in accordance with policy.
