The incumbent practices as direct supervisor to Nurses within the Montana VA Healthcare system. This Nurse Manager has immediate oversight of the Nursing Staff in the Operating Room, Endoscopy. The Nurse Manager is responsible for overall delivery care within each unit of responsibility. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work. Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates. Evaluating the performance of subordinates. Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of subordinates. Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters (such as performance and conduct issues) Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors. Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate. Following the hiring and selection process for new employees. Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training. Has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences, as well as orienting new Nurse Managers. Identifying and implementing performance improvement based on performance/quality measures such as but not limited to; VASQIP data, customer/Veteran satisfaction, AES results, Infection Prevention and Environment of Care Tracers. Maintaining patient and employee safety, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards. Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. Ensuring appropriate staffing within the OR, Endoscopy on a continual basis (24/7), validating the daily patient census/workload, and working with other Nurse Managers to identify and share resources as well as Float Pool nursing staff. Completing Staffing Methodology in accordance with the VA Staffing Methodology Directive and uses the results as a guide for staffing. Ensuring that suspense's and reports are completed timely along with proficiencies and performance appraisals. Participating on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. Supports Shared Governance and encourages employees to participate in facility councils. Maintaining a partnership with the union and adhering to EEO principles. Collaboratively works with other Nurse Managers for coverage during absences to handle administrative and clinical issues, such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and patient and/or staff issues. It may include temporary coverage for a Nurse Manager in another area or acting Associate Chief Nurse when assigned.
