The Assistant Nurse Manager for the Mental-Behavioral Health is accountable for the management of a nursing clinical area under the direction of the Nurse Manager. The Assistant Nurse Manager's practice is characterized by leadership and expertise in managing various issues. When providing direct services to patients, acts as a role model of expert and ethical clinical nursing. The registered nurse is an essential member of the health care team and is responsible for implementation and evaluation of the plan of care. Patient populations include Veterans who present with the full range of DSM-IV mental disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders. Patients are likely to present with co-morbid medical conditions, functional decline and unstable living conditions. Duties include, but not limited to the following: Provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff and others. Identify and analyze problems which effect/impede patient care and initiate their resolution. Coordinates patient care and collaborates with other disciplines/departments to achieve patient care outcomes. Responsible for direct supervision of the inpatient nursing staff of the assigned areas. Perform specialized treatments for patients as appropriate and apply and maintain appropriate competencies to do so. Takes a leadership role in utilizing problem-solving methodologies to resolve system and/or process problems that impact patient care or staff performance at the unit level. Uses sound clinical judgment in ensuring the delivery of care to the patient population on assigned area(s). Guides staff in the implementation of the nursing process in caring for patients. Implements policies and procedures in the area(s) and monitors compliance by staff members.
