The Assistant Nurse Manager position is an entry level management position. In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, functions as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the operational function of the designated units. Assignment may include (but is not limited to) scheduling, staffing, evaluating, counseling, and directing nursing personnel in assigned units. You will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities: Directly supervising the Community Care nursing staff (to include Interfacility Consult RN Coordinator, Patient Travel RN Coordinator, Community Care RN Coordinators, Community Care RN Liaisons, and Behavioral Health Community Care clinical staff) as designated by the Nurse Manager. Acting as the Nurse Manager during time of Nurse Manager absences. Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work. Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates. Evaluating the performance of subordinates as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Making recommendations to the Nurse Manager for appointments, advancements, or reassignments of subordinates. Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters (such as performance and conduct issues). Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors. Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate. Following the hiring and selection process for new employees in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training. Identifying and implementing performance improvement based on performance/quality measures. Maintaining patient and employee safety, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards. Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with other departments, both internal and external to the VA. Collaborating with the Nurse Manager to ensure the Community Care department is staffed appropriately, validating the workload, and using national staffing tools as a guide for staffing. Ensuring that suspense's and reports are completed timely along with proficiencies and performance appraisals as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Participating on service level committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. Supports shared governance and encourages employees to participate in facility councils.
