The incumbent practices as a direct supervisor for nurses within Montana VA Health Care System and supports the mission and vision of the Health Care System. The Nurse Manager has designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of the Medical/Surgical Unit. This includes the authority to accept, amend, or reject the work of employees. Duties include but not limited to the following: Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work. Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates . Evaluating the performance of subordinates. Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of subordinates. Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters (such as performance and conduct issues) Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate Following the hiring and selection process for new employee. Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training. Has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences, as well as orienting new Nurse Managers. Identifying and implementing performance improvement based on performance/quality measures such as but not limited to; ORYX measures, customer/Veteran satisfaction, PRN effectiveness, AES results, and hand hygiene. Maintaining patient and employee safety, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards. Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians, Ensuring appropriate staffing within the Medical Surgical Unit on a continual basis (24/7), validating the daily patient census, and working with other Nurse Managers to identify and share resources. Ensuring that suspense's and reports are completed timely along with proficiencies and performance appraisals. Completing Staffing Methodology in accordance with the VA Staffing Methodology Directive and uses the results as a guide for staffing the Medical/Surgical Unit. Participating on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. Supports Shared Governance and encourages employees to participate in facility councils Ensuring appropriate staffing within the Medical Surgical Unit on a continual basis (24/7), validating the daily patient census, and working with other Nurse Managers to identify and share resources. Maintaining a partnership with the union and adhering to EEO principles. Collaboratively works with other Nurse Managers for coverage during absences to handle administrative and clinical issues, such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and patient and/or staff issues. It may include temporary coverage for a Nurse Manager in another area or acting Associate Chief Nurse when assigned. Completing other duties as assigned.
