Rehabilitation nurses help individuals affected by chronic illness or physical disability to achieve their greatest potential, adapt to their disabilities and work toward productive, independent lives. As a rehab nurse, you will begin to work with individuals and their families soon after the onset of a disabling injury or chronic illness. An average inpatient rehab stay is 10-14 days and most common diagnoses include stroke, MI, pneumonia, multi-trauma, fractures, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries. Rehab nurses base their practice on rehabilitative and restorative principles by managing complex medical issues, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, providing ongoing patient/caregiver education, and setting goals/interventions for maximal independence.
