The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) is seeking candidates for the position of Program Officer for the IARS-FDA SmartTots Public-Private Partnership.
The position of Program Officer is a new role created to support the SmartTots research direction and the design of new research studies. This is a part-time position to be funded by a contract between the IARS and the candidate’s academic institution.
Lead the analysis of research results and the identification of future research strategy and direction.
Assist with the design of preclinical and clinical research, including study designs and protocols, methodology, data collection, laboratory procedures, randomization procedures, recruiting materials, data analysis, and outcome dissemination.
Serve as the focal point for collection and analysis of data to support future research.
Track and monitor emerging research on SmartTots-related issues.
Identify potential sources of research funds, including within the public sector (federal and state government) and the private sector (foundations and corporations).
Develop relationships within the NIH and other federal agencies with the potential to support the SmartTots initiative with funding or other resources.
Plan, attend and participate in relevant scientific conferences and meetings and their follow up.
Prepare reports and whitepapers on the status of research in pediatric anesthesia neurotoxicity.
Respond to questions from professionals and parents on medical and scientific issues relating to SmartTots.
Perform other duties as they arise.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Terminal doctoral degree (MD, PharmD, PhD, or equivalent)
Minimum of five years work experience in a clinical or pharmaceutical environment (excludes post doc education).
In-depth knowledge of preclinical and clinical research relating to pediatric anesthetic neurotoxicity, including key scientific publications.
Experience in pharmacological epidemiology strongly preferred. Strong background in neuroscience desired.
Understanding of research principles. The ideal candidate will possess experience and expertise in anesthesia related research.
Hands-on experience with data analysis, data mining and interpretation, specifically relating to anesthesia databases.
Ability to function as a project lead for a new clinical investigation program.
Proven experience publishing scientific articles.
Understanding of research funding, including grant writing, proposal review and award processes.
Ability to work independently and travel as necessary.
This role may be undertaken in combination with an academic position. For the right candidate, there may be flexibility in % work time to allow for successful completion of both responsibilities. SmartTots is a Public-Private Partnership between the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS). The mission of this partnership is to coordinate and fund research with the goal of ensuring safe surgery for the millions of infants and young children who undergo anesthesia and/or sedation each year. The FDA and IARS work together with multiple stakeholders to leverage their collective resources in an effort to address this important issue.
