The Ridge Behavioral Health System is seeking a dynamic and talented Nurse Manager. Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, coordinates and supervises personnel to provide quality care to the patients and all components of the treatment program. Uses leadership skills to problem-solve, critically think, and formulate positive resolutions.
Position Specific Competencies:
Supervises employees of the Nursing Units to ensure assigned duties are complete.
Stays within FTE guidelines established for the department, demonstrates understanding of correlation between FTE and patient census.
Ensures employees attend all mandatory in-services, competency training, and Unit meetings.
Collaborates with HR Director regarding employee issues.
Monitors employees' performance on an ongoing basis, providing regular informal feedback on work quality and quantity and on conduct. Maintains written documentation of all informal feedback.
Follows-up on all employee issues and provides corrective action or counseling with employees as needs arise and in a timely manner.
Interviews applicants, following HR policies and procedures; recommends the best-suited candidate for selection while following corporate guidelines regarding HR Smart and ACE testing procedures.
Communicates performance expectations to staff.
Conducts monthly staff meetings to communicate pertinent information, ensuring that staff have input into agenda.
Identifies training needs of department staff and assists in coordination and development.
Recommends changes or improvements of departmental operations to Chief Nursing Officer including unit/programming supplies.
Oversees preparation of the six-week schedule, the daily staffing and upcoming immediate schedule needs.
Ensures that draft schedules are posted on the units at least 4 weeks in advance. Finalized schedules are completed and posted at least 2 weeks in advance.
Effectively utilizes resource pool and/or part-time employees when scheduling to enhance continuity and efficiency of care.
Staffs the hospital according to acuity assuring the units are staffed appropriately and predicts and executes needed adjustments as they occur.
Accurately records all sick calls, tardiness, cancellations and absences by completing the "Employee Illness Call-in Report Form" and submit to the Infection Control Nurse.
Assumes 24 hour responsibility for adequate staffing coverage.
Regularly attends treatment team meetings to provide nursing support to formulation of treatment plan. Reviews and signs supervisor rounds, asks key questions of staff, rounds with purpose several times per shift, walks the units, talks to patients about their care.
Communicates and monitors appropriate care and discharge planning as appropriate.
Monitors patients' progress in compliance with treatment plan, making recommendations. Problem solves patient care issues with primary staff and treatment team and makes recommendations for continued care.
Identifies, reviews and monitors all QI,PI, incident reports or treatment team meetings with nursing staff, safety/risk management, infection control and incident reports discussing trends with nursing staff and audit of other factors regarding patient care and communicates to staff regarding their impact on patient care.
Performs chart and unit audits to identify areas of needed improvement and establishes a plan or system for follow-up with a plan of improvement.
Maintains and develops positive clinical relationships with physicians.
Develops and implements a formal departmental orientation program, documenting each participant's involvement in process. Adequately documents each new hire's participation in orientation, in accordance with applicable standards and regulations. Maintains communication with new hires to ensure satisfactory orientation.
Conducts performance evaluations and competencies timely as directed by HR and consistent with HR policy and in accordance with corporate service excellence expectations reviewing with each employee.
Develops an understanding of the hospital's financial operations and his/her department's role in meeting financial performance goals.
Manages staff to communicate effectively with physicians regarding patients' physical and mental condition.
Demonstrates sound knowledge of psychotropic medications and other medications commonly used with psychiatric patients.
Ensures staff to conduct community meetings, family groups, didactic and support groups and education groups as assigned.
Provides input into discharge planning process when appropriate. Ensures discharge paperwork and process is complete and patient experience is positive.
Collaborates with physician as necessary to promote positive patient outcomes.
Intervenes early in potential crisis situations; demonstrates ability to defuse combative or aggressive patients.
Information provided to social services, treatment team and physicians is timely, constructive and clinically sound.
Ensures staff must inform the Nurse Manger of changes, trends and developments in medication and nursing management of psychiatric patients, specifically high risk situations.
Ensures staff demonstrates clinical effectiveness; proactively and correctively identifies at-risk patients so that prevention measures may be formulated and implemented in patients' best interest.
Ensures staff actions demonstrate thorough knowledge of patients' diagnosis and treatment objectives.
Ensures staff demonstrate follow-through with treatment plan and nursing care plan due to mentoring, education and expectations set for patient care.
Properly instructs and guides MHTs, RNs and LPNs in patient care responsibilities and assignments.
Follows proper NCI de-escalation techniques when handling crisis situations.
Provides appropriate crisis intervention as necessary by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques to diffuse the situation, correctly prioritizing safety concerns.
Uses appropriate counseling skills by de-escalating aggression, using active listening skills, using appropriate tone and volume of voice, providing a high frequency and variety of positive reinforcements, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture.
Demonstrates proper procedures for therapeutic holds and seclusions.
Monitors all patient belongings are properly inventoried and logged by all staff in assisting with this process.
